Making Money Online; Real Tips for Serious People.
![]()
Financial independence is absolutely possible by setting up a home-based business using MLM or network marketing and direct sales. So far in previous posts I have reviewed for you:
1) WHY leaving a W-2 or corporate position and striking out on your own is a good idea for serious people that have the passion, drive, determination and want no income ceiling and to control their own life and destiny.
2) HOW to make the transition, find what it is you are passionate about so that you are inspired and fulfilled each day doing what you love and make money, too. As you set up your business, be aware of any city, county, state or other laws, regulations, or perhaps permits that will be necessary. Also take note of the new FTC blogging and profit claims guidelines.
3) WHAT to expect from a network marketing or direct sales company by looking closely at the leaders’ and founders’ resumes. What is their experience in direct sales and network marketing? What is their vision for the company? Do they have the wherewithal to reach their goals? Are they prepared for exponential growth? Have they got the necessary technology to stay competitive? And, prepare yourself for opposition if you choose a network marketing company to work with. Many think they are illegal or a pyramid scheme. In reality, the good ones are a proven system where the design, creation and expense the corporate team has gone through becomes a road map for your own success as you duplicate what they have done. Follow their lead and pave the way for your own financial stability and success.
4) COMPENSATION expectations. You shouldn’t need an attorney to explain to you how, when, and under what circumstances you get paid certain amounts. Also, the company should be about paying you to promote its products and services more than pushing you to find and sign up new recruits.
Now, I have a few final thoughts as you prepare to begin the real journey of creating your own home-based business, online business, or affiliate yourself with a particular company.
- Longevity and value. Will the company be around long term? Have you seen ads and videos about, “Join now! This opportunity won’t last!” Any real opportunity should still be viable in 3 to 5 years! If it’s gone tomorrow or next week, why join it? Many come and go each year soon after start up. Look for companies that actually have a track record to review and have been around at least a few years and is debt-free. Ask to see financial statements to get a real look at how the company is doing. Doris Wood, author and direct sales and network marketing expert states, “Be sure the company has sufficient capital to adequately cover expenses. Can [the company] meet its obligations for rent, products, phone and data processing to ensure distributors are paid when promised? Can it cover the cost of possible legal fees and day-to-day business operations? Are you sold on the product? You must believe in the product or it’s doubtful you’ll ever be able to sell it,” Wood says, “let alone recruit others to do so.”
- Is the venture committed to training its distributors for success? Ask what kind of training programs and/or training and marketing tools are offered. A really solid and profitable network marketing company places a high priority on training and support. Many network marketers quit because no one has trained them to run a network marketing or direct sales business. Because new reps don’t know how to sell, they don’t get paid, quickly become frustrated and quit or look for another opportunity.
- It is usually a good bet that if the company’s products or services are solving someone’s problems or making their life easier or more pleasant in some way, you should be able to promote them and earn a decent living. Ask yourself, would you use these products or services if you were not building a business around them? Are they a good value? Will they be easy to share with others no matter what the economy is doing? Will this particular company best suit your financial needs and goals?
As I’ve done my research, some common traits of successful marketers have really stood out. To wrap up, here are some of my best tips for you:
- Be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. When your leaders train you in various techniques, pay close attention but then deliver your message your unique way. No one likes a phony and they are easy to spot! Your message should genuinely reflect your own voice, your personality and not sound scripted.
- Choose the best business for you, be smart, commit to it, and really study and do research. They will train you but cannot possibly cover everything that may come up. Do your own research be thorough, be prepared — know your stuff. By being very committed and knowledgeable, you will be able to overcome many challenges ahead. Because many network marketing or direct sales opportunities have low start up costs, sometimes this allows the wrong people to join. Don’t translate a fairly low dollar commitment with a weak new business owner commitment. Treat the initial entry costs or start up costs as if you invested $100,000. Prepare a written business plan and commit to following it. If you were successful in other business ventures or sales, this does not mean you will automatically earn top dollar in network marketing or direct sales. Learn the new rules of these industries. As in anything new, tangible results may take awhile. Many quit right before true success and income! Turn to your sponsors when you need answers; they have been where you are now. When you take your business seriously, commit seriously, work it each day, keep up with the latest trends, train seriously… you can make some serious money.
- Be enthusiastic, positive, knowledgeable, caring. If you have chosen to do something that you are really passionate about and you’ve done the necessary research on the company, its products and services, and have determined that “this is it!”, then this should be easy to do and come naturally. No cheerleading chants or slick sales techniques will be necessary! Surround yourself with positive, enthusiastic people. When you fill your mind with positive thoughts, you generate the energy you need to make your business flourish. Your energetic and positive attitude will be infectious! Negativity from others will bounce right off of you. No one can take your positivity away from you but YOU.
- Have vision. Vision is closely related to goal setting. Determine exactly what it is you will accomplish with your business. Envision yourself receiving daily checks in the mail, winning awards, changing lives all around you for the better. For goals, be very specific, write them down, revise if necessary, place them where you can see them each day as you work. For example: “I want to earn $4,000 per month by December of this year.”
- Use leverage to create income quickly. We all know that if we work hard and do our best, we can accomplish a great deal. But, this also means your time, your money, your experiences, your own ideas. This will only take you so far! Want a shortcut? In order to maximize leverage quickly, you need a mentor. Someone that has been there and accomplished what it is you are trying to accomplish by yourself. Ideally, someone in your up-line (if you have decided that network marketing is right for you) or a sponsor (if you have chosen direct sales) should be able to provide this service to you. This will save you time, energy, money, and emotional stress in the long run. After you have followed your mentor’s advice and have become successful yourself, move on to assisting others in joining your team and just duplicate the success process!
Commit, persist, learn, return (give massive value) and… earn!
To your prosperity and online success,

Deborah,
You make some great points here. Going from employee to business owner/person is definately a mind shift. I think the fear, risks and security are things that stop most people. Becoming that leader as you mention is important.

Deborah,
What you say is so true when choosing a network marketing company. You must love it and I like that you must be yourself. At times you need to step out of your comfort zone, but that is growth, but never change who you are.

Welcome, Rebecca:
I appreciate you stopping by and commenting. I have been wondering how people use “attraction marketing” if they are faking who they “say” they are? Being yourself is so much easier too! I hope you have found what you were looking for online.
I wish you much success,

Hi Deborah,
Being financailly free frees us up so that we can focus on higher order life goals.
Well, I’ll try this again. I just submitted my comments, then lost them all as I did not see the captcha code requirement below. ugh!
Anyway, wanted to thank you for the Tips to Making Money Online. It is amazing to me how many people still don’t get it. Hopefully if they read your post the light bulb will get lit!
Looking forward to reading your next post, my friend!

Hello, Linda:
I disabled that WP Plugin and am trying another. I get way too much spam otherwise! Visiting a blog and commenting gives the blog so much value and I don’t want the visit to be unpleasant.
Thank you for being persistent and for your help in letting new online marketers and bloggers know that this type of business is work, takes research, and is not for everyone. They have to take steps to be successful; it isn’t “automatic”!
Deborah
some great content Deborah mostly summed up by mindset and attitude. Find the WHY and the HOW usually appears. You’re right if the set up costs for your business were $100k plus (modest for a franchise incidentally) the commitment to make it work would be high
continued success

In the end, it’s still up to the potential business owner to do their homework and make appropriate decisions, right? The amount of commitment, passion, and drive vary from person to person so their results can vary widely. It still amazes me how many people think they just choose a certain type of company, set up a blog, and think the money flies into their bank account. Could it be all the misleading advertising? LOL!

Thanks for this post Deborah,
It’s surprising how many people treat Network Marketing like a hobby and not a busines. The funny thing is that those who treat it like a hobby will be paid as a hobbyist and those who treat it like a business will be paid like business owners. It’s really the ultimate mirror. Whenever people get started, insecurities and flaws they never knew existed come to the surface. If we can treat this as a gift and do research like you have then we will be rewarded personally and financially.

Deborah, These are some really great tips! I think so many people just jump into Network Marketing, direct sales, etc.. without doing any kind of research. Also I think some people start out in this industry thinking that working from home is easy when in fact it requires hard work and a consitent effort, and a passion and deep desire for success!
I think anyone who is considering an online business should read this post. You provided some very useful information! Thanks for sharing!

When the topic gets serious, I do a lot of research to make sure I’ve covered everything as thoroughly as I can (without writing a book). Hmmm, there’s an idea!
Whenever I see successful people online, like you, it’s obvious that you are passionate but sure of yourself, enjoying your choice of an industry and business association. I wish more people took the time to choose wisely for themselves.
Thank you for your valuable comments!

Hi Deborah,
I love your blogsite. It is very attractive, and I love all the blue
. I enjoyed reading your post, and I think it is such a good idea to summarize your previous blogs and add a link. I will keep that in mind for my own blog, as I frequently have many-parted blogs. But your Captcha has rejected me 2 times – I don’t like that, because I had to start over. Last time I copied my comment so I wouldn’t have to do it all over.

Thank you, Leslie, for reading and commenting. I appreciate it when people leave a comment. It lets you know if you are delivering what people need! I use a wordpress plug in for the Captcha but have not had any other complaints. I really like having something verify if it’s a human or software! It has really cut down on my spam. At one point, I had over 100 spam comments! Sorry you had issues with it.
I will watch to see how it performs, thank you.
I hear the song! LOL!

Wow, what a substantive no nonsense post. I love your point about longevity. There are so many here today opportunities on the web and if people can not find out how long an opportunity is or get a feel for how well it is funded, then find another opportunity.
Welcome, Gary:
Thank you for your support of my post. Being a successful business owner yourself, you know how fleeting some of these businesses are. Many have one goal in mind: hit the market fast and hard, take what you can get, then run! We need short-term and long-term goals and income in order to maintain our business and personal needs.
Take care, I really enjoy your posts, too!

Hi Deborah

Hello, Debby!
I have been watching your online journey, and I must say… you have really focused in the right direction! If you have an important, interesting, and meaningful message to share (as you obviously do), it’s important to get outside your comfort zone and take to your backyard community! I can’t wait to see the positive response that you will receive for reaching out to those that need your message so desperately!

Hi Deborah,
Great article on the factors to consider when deciding whether to join a NM company. In my experience, the most important factor is the leadership of the team that you join. They can make or break your experience exposing you to the best training etc. of course, in the end the only factor that will truly count is yourself and your attitude to building your biz.
Thanks for a very informative article.

Thank you for commenting! So many people come online and just think that they’ll make money right away. Usually they are mislead either intentionally or unintentionally by a well-meaning friend or family member. I just wanted to point out that when cooler heads prevail, when they research and ask themselves the right questions, then they more than likely will head in the right direction.
Best wishes to you,
Deborah
Hi Deborah,
Be yourself, that’s critical! Create value, get to know yourself, learn about your target market, their problems and your solutions and help them with that problem…
If you can match up the problem to the solution you are onto a winner!
Great to be here again! Hope you are well,

Great post Deborah. Very, very complete and there is one item you might want to add when considering a company. Make sure the company has a compliance attorney on board. You will then know if they are in it for the long haul.

Damayanthi: Thanks so much for stopping by!
So many people get overwhelmed when they come online and don’t understand that “what you see (unless you look very closely) is what you get” doesn’t apply with opportunities. Many use slight of hand, deceptive techniques, and slick sales to get you to “join.” This might work for a short time but as people take notice that they were duped into joining, that they have no real support, they’ll leave. So, if the goal is to just get “sign-ups,” that’s one thing. Most people know that short-term and residual income are the goal and you cannot achieve this when your reputation is in tatters and word gets around.
Best wishes to you and your online success,
Deborah
It takes a person with strong DESIRE, self motivation and moderate people skills to make it in network marketing. So many think it’s a get rich quick scheme and never put the effort into it to reap the rewards. Like any business, it takes time. It could be 6 months, 2 years or 5 years, but anyway you look at it, it’s a real business that needs to be treated like one.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Deborah,
I certainly enjoyed reading your post concerning making money with a home-based business. With all the tax advantages, it certainly allows a person who is serious and operates their business as a business some real spendable cash with the allowable deductions.
A person’s mindset plays a real critical role in their successes. We must consistently work on personal development, build a targeted prospect list, mastermind with successful entrepreneurs in our industry and maintain a commitment to our business and vision.
I look forward to a return visit at your blog.
Go out and make it a great day!

Lloyd,
Your valuable comments are much appreciated. Many either think it is too hard to start a business so they don’t even try or they think it’s easy because someone told them it was. Then, when the dollars don’t fly into their bank account, they walk away. Mindset is key to success as well as having done the proper research and preparation before you even begin!
Thank you, and much success to you!
