Today, I witnessed two experiences that I’d like to share with you.  The purpose of this post is to make you aware of your surroundings and to find hope and encouragement.

Back in mid-February, my husband came to me and mentioned he saw something growing in one of my old pots.  He said, “I think it’s your bat-face.”  Now teasing me about this one particular plant would not be funny!  I first discovered this plant on the Internet. I had to have it! I searched high and low for it.  I finally found one, ordered it online, and put it in a pot when it arrived.  I lovingly cared for it but it had not liked being confined in a pot (just like me; gotta be free!).  It succumbed to the Florida heat.  I was living in a situation where I could not plant it in the ground and I was so sad!

Bat-Face in the garden.

Now, my husband comes to me two years later (we had since moved into our new home) and he mentions my deceased bat-face.  Not a joke to me!  Since he knows me better than anyone else, he had to have meant it and was not teasing — well, if he knew what was good for him!  I took a look at the emerging growth in the old pot.  I did recognize the pot as the one that I had planted the bat-face in.  Hmmm… it did look like it just might be!  I am happy to report that I watered it, placed it in the sun, and voila!  It was the bat-face (Cuphea llavea)! Just to prove it, I took photos today of it happily enjoying the place I found in my butterfly garden… just for it!

Bloom detail.

The nickname, bat-face is because the shape of the blossoms reminds you of a cute little bat face.  I took this picture so you can see but the wind was blowing.  Best shot I could get! This little plant came back to life after being “dead” for two years!  The new growth came from the dead and dry stalks… not from seeds!  I was totally shocked!  Now, when I see how happy it is, fulfilling its purpose, surrounded by other lovely blooming neighbors, what a thrill I get!

Just when we think there is no hope, when all is lost, miracles can and do happen!  Too many people give up too soon!  They have no faith.  They want things now, instantly.  If something doesn’t go their way when they think it should, they throw it away (thank goodness I just didn’t have the heart to dump my plant out of my pot!) and look for something new.  Everything is disposable today!

A few years ago, my mother-in-law called me.  She has since passed away from cancer.  She was a great, kind, and loving mother.  We really miss her!  She was talking about a family member that had grown tired of being a wife and mother and just wanted to go out to bars and party all the time.  This was painful for my mother-in law.  I told her, “The grass isn’t always greener.  There’s a lot of artificial turf out there!  She’s just trading one set of problems for another.”  I guess this person felt her husband and children were disposable. She wanted a new lifestyle and was willing to throw her life away on one she felt would make her happier. It’s funny how I always think of things in terms of gardening and nature!  But, that has been the best teacher for me!  This is how I learned all about the real world.

Beauty and Strength.

This morning, I went out to my butterfly garden and imagine my surprise!  I had a pink zinnia in bloom after one of the coldest winters southwest Florida has experienced in 20 to 30 years!  I had planted the tender annuals a year and a half ago and here was a beautiful blooming example of nature at its finest.  I grabbed my camera to capture what I see as a living example of beauty, strength, perseverance, and reaching your full potential… becoming what God intended you to be!

There are times when we find it hard to see the miracles that are happening all around us.  Some people think things just “happen,” it’s a coincidence.  Not to me! This was a miracle meant to inspire me, uplift me, and to motivate me to share with everyone I know.

Slow down, take a look around you.  Take in the sights, sounds, and vibrations of life all around you.  See the miracles, take them into your heart.  Become inspired!

Yes, slow down and enjoy life a little bit more…don’t give up too soon on anyone or anything, believe in hope and try not to want everything yesterday (okay so I’m still struggling with the last one…lol!). I can see if you look at things in those terms, yes there are “miracles” that happen every day. I appreciate you sharing this post…just what I needed to read today :-) Christine

  • I had a similar thing happen to me.It was the end of the growing season and very cold.I had not watered my geraniums because they were dead. My mom passed away and the strangest thing happened about a week later. My mother’s favorite color was pink and a new pink bloom came out on my geranium plant that looked dead.I felt it was a sign from my mom. Thanks for the post.

  • Deborah, this is my first visit to your blog, but it won’t be my last. I love that you relate life to gardening. Makes me think of my mother, who’s been gone now for several years. She was an avid gardener, mostly vegetables and fruits, and always seemed to have a veritable jungle covering about 2 acres of her property.

I didn’t inherit her deep love of “diggin’ in the dirt”, but really miss having that peaceful surrounding. Maybe I’ll even try a bit more gardening, if we ever get to move out of Phoenix. It’s just too dang hot here, although my husband has several plants that he babies along, waiting for the day he can take them out of pots and put them in the earth.

Congratulations on a job well done. Keep up the inspirational work.

  • I was all in with your post Deborah until the “Cute Bat Face” comment. But I let that slip because the rest contained so much great stuff. You keep us in and drove home with great analogies excluding of course the “Cute Bat Face”

  • Hey Deb’s
That’s amazing that after 2 years it came back to life. So what do you think about humans. I mean if we weren’t so quick to burn them or put tons of earth on them do you think they might come back to life lol.

    Great post as always

    Keep smiling

    • Dr. Sheck: Thank you for the comment. In order for us to really help others, I think it’s important to be “open” and truly let others see what we are all about. It takes courage, especially for me, to let others in. But I want to help so I have to hope that by being open and honest maybe what I reveal can help someone else.

      Best wishes,

  • Hi Deborah,
i agree that “there is a lot of artificial turf out there” in this easily disposable society. But when something grows in fertile ground, even if it appears to be dying it may just be going into hybernation or shedding its dead outer layer.
Often, in life, in relationships, and in business, we may flourish for awhile but then hit obstacles, struggles and difficult times. We may feel like giving up. We may feel depressed, even despondent. But if we continue to keep our focus on our dream, our goal, our desired outcome – especially during our darkest moments – voila – the bat-face may emerge. I will keep this image in my mind when I run into one of those dark moments or periods. Thank you for a lovely true life story.

  • I LOVE your post Deborah! Thank you for sharing this! It is so true that we have come to a place where we feel everything in this life is disposable, but in truth life is FLEETING, and we need to make the most of sometimes very difficult situations! I love how you have used the analogy of your flowers and their rebirth to recognize how miracles are possible and happening to us today!!

  • So refreshing. I write gardening articles for a local magazine and last November I had a rose blooming and of course it was the topic of my article. It should be on my blog under the Poetry/Gardening tab. I know Bat Face Cuphea very well. I use to stock it at my garden center. Don’t feel bad, it never did well for me either. It must thrive on a certain amount of neglect. Maybe two years of it. Thanks so much sharing this. Gardens are metaphors for so many things; hope, rebirth, trials, friendship and especially the things we cannot control.

Lovely story! I have a couple of plants in pots that would be so great if they came back and I just don’t have the heart to throw away either. LOL. You’ve just given me hope!

Deb Augur recently posted..You Gotta Be “Cool”

    • Thanks, Deb! I knew there were others out there like me! If I were super ambitious, the bat-face would have truly been long dead. If I were a fanatic about weeding, the zinnia would have been pulled out long ago! If I see something that looks familiar, I let it go! After all, a weed is just a plant that you don’t want. I sometimes wait to see and decide later! That’s how I got my native plant, red salvia in my butterfly garden. Probably birds planted it. I want it, and it’s even larger this year!

      To your daily miracles,

      Deborah

  • See that’s amazing!!!
That goes to prove that even when you think there’s no energy left, here comes an overwhelming wave of power ‘n what once seemed lifeless, now is back to life!!!
